Materials Redefined
These sculptures are made from materials used by diabetics to monitor and control the disease. Test strips are inserted in tiny machines that monitor blood glucose levels; all are thrown away after one time use. The other materials, such as insulin storage bottles, syringes, applicators, insulin storage reservoirs, parts of insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors are also thrown away after one time use.
I have also used discarded refrigerator parts and copper water and gas supply lines for some of the sculptures.
Diabetes is an ugly devastating disease. The waste of life and of money spent on an avoidable disease (type 2) made me think why not make something beautiful out of what otherwise would be trash. I hope you enjoy looking at these as much as I have in creating them.
